Deus Ex Mankind Divided A.R.C. Heavy Mask

Description

One of six different helmets/masks worn by the Augmented Rights Coalition extremists. Protagonist Adam Jensen encounters these ruthless henchmen of Viktor Marchenko throughout Deus Ex Mankind Divided, especially at the G.A.R.M. scientific research center located in the Swiss Alps and during the final showdown, subverting the Save Harbour Convention at the London Apex Center.

Other than the standard issue mask this on appears to be worn mostly by the heavy weapons guys (you know the ones wielding shotguns and heavy machine guns). Game internal nomenclature is ArcMask Type B.

This mask was created from the original ingame 3D model using blender and Pepakura.
Kudos to Eidos Montreal for an overall phantastic art direction contributing to one of the most intriguing fictional worlds in recent videogame history.

Some details about my making process:
  • The mask was build as papercraft from the ingame model using strong 160 g/m^2 paper. Inside reinforced with one layer of glass fibre epoxy resin composite.
  • Coated with high gloss gold acrylic spray paint (a pain in the *** to keep clear of dust and lint without proper spray booth, very prone to scratches and finger prints -> would not recommend).

very cool looking, good job! This definitely caught my eye.
about the gold paint, i have a question: I understand it was hard to obtain the desired result, with the surface being vulnerable to scratches, fingerprints etc. Was this only a problem during the drying time, or is it more of a permanent thing? What i mean is, now that it is dry, is it still vulnerable to the suroundings, is the spray paint still high maintenance and pratically untouchable? I ask because i am in the middle of a similar project myself, trying to figure out how to get the best possible "shiny metal" finish and the highest possible realistic looking gloss. Gold spray paint with a high shine/gloss finish as you used here has been my go-to idea so far, but i am aware there are some serious downsides to it, such as what is mentioned in your description for example. I have created my item as a 3D model in Blender so far, and it is basicllay ready to go, i just don't really know how to go about the finishing touches. If you have any recommendations for paints, methods or anything else you think would help in that direction, i'd greatly appreciate to hear them!
I hope you have an amazing day. :)
